Contractor License Exams

The paperwork is the part nobody teaches

Passing the exam is step one. Then comes the CILB application, the experience affidavits, the financial-responsibility file, the LLC, the insurance — the maze that stalls good contractors for months. We teach it, step by step.

What this is — and isn't

Everything on this page is educational document-preparation and self-help material. It is not legal advice and none of it is an act of contracting. We are not a law firm and we are not your qualifier: nothing is filed under anyone else's license, and you remain the applicant on your own application from start to finish. If you have legal questions about your situation, talk to a Florida-licensed attorney.

License Application Kit

The CILB application, decoded. Most rejections aren't about qualifications — they're about paperwork: an affidavit worded wrong, a financial document missing, a box the reviewer needed checked. The kit walks the whole application the way a reviewer reads it.

  • Step-by-step checklists for the certified-contractor application, in plain English
  • Experience-affidavit templates and worked examples of what "four years of experience" needs to look like on paper
  • Financial-responsibility walkthrough: credit report, what the board looks for, and how to prepare your file
  • The common rejection reasons, and how to not be one of them

Business Setup Kit

A license needs a business behind it. This kit walks the boring-but-mandatory setup so the company is ready the day the license number arrives.

  • Florida LLC formation walkthrough on Sunbiz — the state's filing fee is $125, and you file it yourself
  • Getting your EIN from the IRS (free, and another thing you should never pay a middleman for)
  • Insurance and workers'-comp basics checklist: what Florida expects a licensed contractor to carry, and the questions to ask an agent
  • Bank account, bookkeeping starter setup, and keeping the qualifier paperwork straight

Permits & Paperwork Class

How permitting actually works once you're licensed — the process nobody explains until an inspector fails your job over paperwork.

  • Who pulls what: owner vs. contractor roles, and why "owner-builder" permits are a trap on contracted work
  • The Notice of Commencement: what it is, when it's required, and the sequence that keeps you lien-safe
  • Inspections: scheduling, what inspectors check at each stage, and handling a failed inspection without drama
  • Closeout: final inspections, certificates, and the paper trail that protects you after the job

Service questions

Is this legal advice?

No. Everything here is educational, self-help document preparation and instruction. We are not a law firm, we do not give legal advice, and nothing we provide is an act of contracting. You remain the applicant on your own application, and nothing is ever filed under anyone else’s license. For legal questions, talk to a Florida-licensed attorney.

Do you file the application for me?

No — and be wary of anyone who says they will. You are the applicant; the application, affidavits, and attestations are yours to sign and submit. Our kits and concierge review teach you what the CILB is looking for and help you get your own paperwork right the first time.

What does the state actually charge?

The exam runs about $295 in fees for a first GC attempt, and Florida charges $125 as the state’s filing fee for a new LLC. DBPR application fees vary by license type and timing — always confirm the current fee schedule on the DBPR’s site before you submit.
