Contractor License Exams

The right books, tabbed right — without the $2,400 mystery bundle

Florida's exams are open book, which means the books are half the battle. Here's the official reference list, split the way it actually matters: what rides into the exam room with you, and what stays home.

2026 book-list change

Five references got pulled from the exam room

As of 2026, these titles are study-only for the GC trade parts — you're still tested on their content, but you can't bring them in:

  • Walker's Building Estimator's Reference Book
  • Builder's Guide to Accounting (still allowed for Business & Finance)
  • Design & Control of Concrete Mixtures
  • Placing Reinforcing Bars
  • GA-216 — Application and Finishing of Gypsum Panel Products

Many prep companies still sell them inside "$2,000+ complete sets" as if nothing changed. Read the full breakdown of the 2026 changes before you buy anything.

The official list, split honestly

Room-approved books deserve clean current editions and careful tabbing. Study-only books just need to get into your head — used copies and borrowed sets are fine. Always confirm editions in the current DBPR Candidate Information Booklet; the list is versioned.

Buying books individually?

We point you straight to the publishers at list price — no markup games, no affiliate detours. Depending on your trade's list that means the AIA for the contract documents, the ICC for the Florida Building Code volumes, the NFPA for electrical references, and the DBPR for Florida Statutes Chapter 455 — which is a free PDF, so never pay anyone for it. The in-room list above names the publisher for every title we've verified.

Honest sourcing: our sets are assembled from genuine publisher copies we purchase (first-sale), tabbed by us, and dropshipped to you. We never sell photocopies or "digital versions" of copyrighted references.

Book questions

Can I bring study-only books into the exam room?

No. As of the 2026 book-list change, five references — including Walker’s Building Estimator’s Reference Book and Builder’s Guide to Accounting (for the trade parts) — are study-only: exam questions still draw on their content, but they are banned from the Contract Administration and Project Management exam room. Builder’s Guide to Accounting remains allowed for Business & Finance. Always confirm the current approved list in the DBPR Candidate Information Booklet.

What books can I bring to the Business & Finance exam?

The Business & Finance approved list includes Florida Statutes Chapter 455 (a free PDF from the DBPR), Builder’s Guide to Accounting, the Florida Contractors Manual, and the AIA contract documents. Confirm the current list and required editions in the DBPR Candidate Information Booklet before exam day.

Do I have to buy every book new?

No. Spend on clean, current editions of the room-approved list — those are the books you’ll tab and carry in. Study-only titles can be bought used, borrowed, or covered by a course, because they never enter the exam room. And Florida Statutes Chapter 455 is a free official PDF — never pay for it.

Is this the official DBPR book list?

We track the official reference list closely, but the DBPR Candidate Information Booklet is always the authority. The list is versioned and editions change — confirm your trade’s current booklet before buying anything, from us or anyone else.
